President of the Russian Hockey Federation (RFH) Vladislav Tretiak answered whether the captain of the Washington can be considered Alexandra Ovechkina the most outstanding Russian hockey player in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL).
— Can Ovechkin be considered the most outstanding Russian player in the NHL?
— The most remarkable today, undoubtedly, yes. But we had great players like Fedorov, Mogilny, Bure, Malkin. They didn’t score as much as Ovechkin, but each is good in their role. Ovechkin is a powerful player, he scores with a quality shot, Bure had incredible technique. There are many different hockey players, but Ovechkin is truly great. During his lifetime, he was called big, but not everyone is called that. But I wouldn’t say he’s the only one. Many of us in the NHL score 50 goals per season. Not so much, of course, but other Russians are also among the best players. We must say thank you to them all. But if we’re talking about today, our number one is probably Ovechkin.
He has a lot of responsibilities, everyone looks at him. Sometimes we go too far, we write about him every day, it puts pressure on him. He’s also a person, he reads too, this one is annoying. We need to give him peace of mind,” Tretyak said on the “First Shift” show on Retro FM radio.
On Tuesday, 38-year-old Ovechkin scored a double in the NHL regular season match against New Jersey (6:2). The Russian scored 838 goals in regular season championship matches, narrowing the gap between Wayne Gretzky’s sniper record (894) to 56 goals.
