This season, the 29-year-old forward has scored 34 points (20+14) in 56 matches. He is in the final season of a four-year contract that pays him $5.7 million per year. Washington will keep 50% of Mantha’s salary.
Mantha was selected by Detroit in the first round of the draft, 20th overall, in 2013. He currently has 286 points (139 goals, 147 assists) in 476 regular season games with the Red Wings and Capitals.
At the same time, Washington took the attacker Matthew Phillips of the waiver project. Previously, the hockey player was placed on waivers by Pittsburgh. The 25-year-old forward previously played for Washington, which landed Phillips on waivers in February.
