Athletistic / Hockey. Last night there was a major trade in the NHL. As a result, Russian Carolina Hurricanes forward Vasily Ponomarev became a player for the Pittsburgh Penguins.
According to the Penguins press service, the 21-year-old Russian became one of the participants in the deal to trade Pittsburgh’s star forward Jake Guentzel to the Hurricanes. As a result of this exchange, the Penguins received the rights to four players at once: in addition to Ponomarev, Michael Bunting, Ville Koivunen and Cruz Lucius will now play in the Pittsburgh system.
Interestingly, Carolina gave the Penguins a first-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, as well as a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. Note that Pittsburgh retained 25% of Gunzel’s salary ( $1.5 million out of $6 million).
This season, Vasily Ponomarev participated in two NHL games and scored 2 (1+1) points for his performance. In 39 games in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves, the Russian has 29 points (8+21) in the goal+pass system.
