Love forward Dmitry Shevchenko in an interview with Metaratings.ru he shared his opinion on the impact of the work of the head coach of Torpedo Igor Larionov for the development of the Continental Hockey League.
In the 2023/24 season, Torpedo took the seventh position in the Western Conference standings according to the Fonbet results of the KHL regular season and lost to SKA in five matches in the first round of the Gagarin Cup.
— As a person, as a player, it’s such an intellectual block. It’s decency, a lot of knowledge, conversations about football, about music, about books, about wine, about nutrition, about sports – about everything. As for his coaching job, his first year at Torpedo, for everyone, it was “wow”.
He really changed the trends of our hockey, he did everything his way. He opposed everyone. And, probably, we should say thanks for the fact that he began to eliminate points in the preseason and began to change his training methods. After a spectacular first season, a wave of positive hype descended upon him. And the second season is still difficult.
I think one of his tasks is the development of young players. With such people, our league will reach the level that everyone expects much faster,” Shevchenko said.
Larionov has been the head coach of Torpedo since May 2022. In the 2022/23 season he reached the second round of the playoffs with the team. During the current season, the Nizhny Novgorod team announced the signing of a new agreement with the coach for three years.
