Athletistic / Hockey. Two-time Olympic hockey champion and now a deputy of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Vyacheslav Fetisov is confident that Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin will surpass Wayne Gretzky’s goal record in regular season games in the NHL.

“Ovechkin is cool. If you look, no one, even five years ago, would have thought that anyone could come close to Gretzky’s record. But Sasha came close, crept up. He’s coming to Moscow every summer and we skate together, I constantly motivate him: “Sash, the most offensive is to be second; third – not so offensive. I’m sure Ovechkin will last until that moment (setting a new NHL goals record – Rating Athletistic),” Fetisov said according to TASS.

Alex Ovechkin currently has 841 goals in the NHL. He has 53 goals left to reach Wayne Gretzky’s record.

This NHL season, Ovechkin scored 50 points in 63 games, scored 19 goals and completed 31 assists. Washington has 16 games left before the end of the regular season. The 38-year-old Russian’s contract with the capital is valid until the end of the 2025/2026 season.
