The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced in December 2023 the admission of Russian athletes who successfully qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in individual neutral status without the use of national symbols. However, on March 19, it was announced that Russian athletes would not be able to participate in the opening ceremony of the Games. According to the IOC, at the 2024 Olympic Games, according to the most likely scenario, 36 Russian athletes will participate, who will have to sign a special document. The commission will determine whether athletes comply with the conditions for admission to neutral status.
– I think this is all unfair. The International Olympic Committee has always maintained its political neutrality, but it is now completely embroiled in political disputes. Double standards apply. Our hockey players play in America, but we are nevertheless prohibited from participating in the World Championship and the Olympic Games. The IOC is violating the rights of athletes by imposing such conditions. And the ban on participating in team sports, even in neutral status, is absurd!
Of course, every athlete dreams of participating in the Olympic Games. It is a major competition that attracts athletes from all over the world. I myself have participated in four Olympic Games and I can say that it is a real vacation. Today, unfortunately, such a joyful event no longer exists. The Olympic Games without the participation of the best Russian athletes become incomplete,” Tretyak said in an interview with Match TV.
The Summer Olympics are scheduled to take place from July 26 to August 11, 2024 in Paris.
