Coach of the Nizhny Novgorod hockey team “Seagull” Dmitry Fedorov told that young players must learn to behave correctly towards referees, especially since there is already a countermove from the referees.
Starting from the 2023/24 season, Fedorov, after leaving his post as head of KHL TV, began working as an assistant to the head coach of Chaika.
— Communication with the referees itself is normal, but out loud – under no circumstances. During the season, we told the players: “Look, yesterday there was a KHL championship game. The player shouted obscenities at the referee and received two minutes. And after him the coach began to swear and also received two minutes. And the team missed the decisive goal in the 3 versus 5 format. Let’s start with this negative example. We don’t want to repeat that. When you get into adult hockey and say something to the referee, he will throw you out – and that’s it, your career can end. The coach of the adult team will say that they don’t need such a hockey player.
We educate players in a new spirit. In the past, it was considered normal to insult a referee, and many coaches did it. But we must now adopt a different philosophy. And the referees themselves change, they behave very correctly towards the players. They are polite to the coaches. And you need to learn how to behave with them,” Fedorov told .
