Ovechkin: “Washington fought throughout the season and intends to make the NHL playoffs”

The Russian attackerWashington Capitals » Alexander Ovechkin said the team wants to make the NHL playoffs and also explained how he manages to score goals for five consecutive games.

On Sunday, the Capitals beat the Winnipeg Jets at home 3-0. The 38-year-old Russian scored a double during this meeting; in his last five matches he has scored eight goals.

— Like I said earlier, I think now you can see how we actually play. Now everyone in the team has confidence and everyone understands the current situation. As I said a few days ago, that’s why we’re struggling throughout the season, starting in training camp. The regular season will end in two weeks, but we plan to continue playing.

Why has the situation changed? I don’t know. The puck just started flying into the goal, we find a line to throw or a partner’s stick,” Ovechkin is quoted in The Hockey News.

Washington scored 79 points and returned to the playoff zone by defeating the Detroit Red Wings (78) in the fight for eighth place in the NHL Eastern Conference standings.

Ovechkin increased his NHL goal total to 848 and closed the gap on league leading scorer Wayne Gretzky (894) to 46 goals.
