The head coach “Washington » Spencer Carbury said the Russian attacker Alexander Ovechkin scores the most important goals and preserves the team’s chances of qualifying for the NHL playoffs.
The Capitals beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-0 at home on Sunday. The 38-year-old Russian scored a double during this meeting; in his last five matches he has scored eight goals.
“When the biggest games of the year come, when our season is on the line, he (Ovechkin) performs very well every night. “He scores the most important goals for our team to keep us in the playoff race,” Carbery is quoted on the NHL website.
Washington scored 79 points and returned to the playoff zone by beating Detroit (78) in the fight for eighth place in the NHL Eastern Conference standings.
Ovechkin increased his NHL goal total to 848 and closed the gap with the league’s leading scorer, Wayne Gretzky, to 46 goals.
