“This season has been particularly difficult for our young team. Over the summer, we built a new team of young players who fit our playing philosophy, which aims for modern and dynamic hockey. We do not set ourselves for aim to play defensively and achieve victories through hard work. Our strategy is based on offensive play, speed, talent and intelligence on the field, but despite this we cannot completely protect ourselves from injuries. This has been true this season and always will be.
Despite a difficult start, our team found its rhythm, won numerous victories and fought until the end for first place in the regular season. We proved that SKA remains one of the leading clubs in the KHL. In February, we moved into the largest and most modern hockey stadium in the world and set an attendance record. I am sure that we will deliver the Gagarin Cup to Yuri Gagarin Avenue. This is our common dream and I believe that with faith and hard work it will definitely come true. In the spring of 2014, a year before our victory in the Gagarin Cup in 2015, SKA also went through a difficult championship and finished in the second round. We have learned from this experience and are using it to our advantage. Our team has great potential and I believe in every player,” Rotenberg wrote on his Telegram channel.
Roman Rotenberg suffered his third defeat as team coach. Previously, he lost twice to CSKA in the conference finals. Moreover, for the first time in the last 10 years (since the 2014/2015 season), SKA failed to advance beyond the second round of the playoffs. Rotenberg has led the St. Petersburg club since the 2021/2022 season.
