Severstal director Nikolai Kanakov explained why the contract with the head coach Andrei Kozyrev was renewed for just one season.
Kozyrev took over as head of Severstal in May last year. Under his leadership, the team took fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Severstal lost to Spartak Moscow in the first round of the Gagarin Cup with a score of 1–4 in the series.
— We initially had an agreement according to the “1+1” scheme. Here they officially announced that they had signed for one more season. There weren’t really any negotiations, we are all adults and responsible for our words. The season is over for us, we summed up the results and announced that we are continuing our relationship with Andrei Leonidovich.
Would you like to make a longer deal with Kozyrev? Undoubtedly. Why not? For us, this is a new era, a new stage in the life of Cherepovets hockey, new blood, a new peak! So, having a tit in your hands, why look for a pie in the sky? We are working, we have everything sorted out until 2025. Nothing prevents us in the same way, for example, in the spring of next year or even, perhaps earlier – in December this year – from extending the agreement and to announce it”, quotes Kanakova in the Championship.
