Canadian Hockey League (CHL) teams will be able to select players from Russia and Belarus in the 2024 draft, reports Darren Dreger, journalist for Canadian television channel TSN, on social networks.
“CHL clubs have informed that Russian and Belarusian players will be available during the July 3 import draft,” he wrote.
Dreger said the decision was made by a vote of the league’s board of directors and will be officially announced Saturday.
In 2022, the CHL announced a ban on clubs selecting Russian and Belarusian hockey players. The CHL comprises Canada’s three largest junior leagues: the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and the Western Hockey League (WHL).
Nikita Zadorov, Nikita Kucherov, Vladislav Namestnikov, Ivan Barbashev and other Russian players participated in the CHL Import Draft at different times.
