Athletistic / Hockey. Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Ilya Samsonov shared his opinion on his teammate, forward Auston Matthews. Last night, the 26-year-old American scored in the match against the Pittsburgh Penguins (3:2 in overtime) and repeated Alexander Ovechkin’s NHL scoring record in the 21st century.

“Auston is a real sniper. I think Matthews is the second sniper in history after Ovechkin. He is really a great sniper,” Samsonov is quoted in the NHL press service .

In 76 games this season in the NHL, Auston Matthews has scored 102 points (65+37) in the goal+pass system. The Leafs still have five games before the end of the regular season and Matthews has every chance of becoming the sole author of the 21st century record for goals scored in a regular season.

It is noteworthy that before moving to Toronto, Ilya Samsonov played for the Washington Capitals, whose captain is Alexander Ovechkin.
