Attack “Toronto” Auston Matthews repeated the feat of the Russian Alexandra Ovechkina scoring against Pittsburgh (3:2) in an NHL regular season game.
Matthews scored on the power play early in the third period with the score tied 1-1. The goal was the American striker’s 65th this season – earlier in the 21st century, only Washington captain Ovechkin achieved this goal (in the 2007/08 season). Toronto has five games left in the current regular season, the next goal scored will be a record for Matthews.
In total, Matthews became the 13th hockey player in NHL history to score at least 65 goals in a regular season. Over the past 30 years, in addition to him and Ovechkin, this record has been achieved only by Mario Lemieux (69 goals in the 1995/96 season).
As for the game between Toronto and Pittsburgh, Matthew Nies and Jack McCabe also scored for the Maple Leafs, while Rickard Rakell (on an assist from Evgeni Malkin) and Drew O’Connor scored goals for the Penguins.
Toronto, which has already secured access to the playoffs, occupies 5th place in the Eastern Conference with 99 points. “Pittsburgh” (84) is 9th, continuing the fight for a ticket to the Stanley Cup.
