Russian goalkeeper Toronto Maple Leafs Ilia Samsonov believes his teammate is an attacker Auston Matthews inferior to Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin in the list of best snipers.
On Monday, Matthews scored in the NHL regular season game against the Pittsburgh Penguins (3:2 in overtime). The goal was the American striker’s 65th this season – earlier in the 21st century, only Washington captain Ovechkin achieved this goal (in the 2007/08 season). Toronto has five games left in the current regular season, the next goal scored will be a record for Matthews.
— Matthews is a sniper, yes. He’s probably second to Ovi. Auston is a very good sniper,” Samsonov said on the official NHL website.
Ovechkin ranks second on the list of greatest snipers in NHL history, with 851 goals to his name. The record belongs to Wayne Gretzky (894).
Toronto, already assured of access to the playoffs, occupies 5th place in the Eastern Conference with 99 points.
