Former Washington and New York Rangers hockey player Mike Gartner congratulated the Russian forward Alexandra Ovechkina with the establishment of a new achievement in the NHL.
On Tuesday, Ovechkin became the first player in league history to score at least 30 goals in 18 seasons when the Washington captain scored in a 2-1 victory over Detroit. He beat Gartner, who had a similar 17 seasons and with whom the Russian previously shared the record.
— I would like to congratulate you on 18 seasons in which you managed to score 30 goals. I know we only shared this record for a short time, and I’m very grateful for that, but now it’s just yours. There are many NHL records that you have already set, but there is one more great record that you have yet to break. Good luck, I wish you all the best,” Gartner said in a video posted to the Capitals’ social media channels.
Ovechkin increased his number of goals in regular NHL championships to 852 and reduced the gap with Canadian Wayne Gretzky’s record (894) to 42 goals.
