“In accordance with the law, the Russian Hockey Federation has the right to establish restrictions on the participation of athletes who do not have the right to play for Russian national teams in official All-Russian hockey competitions. These restrictions are subsequently approved by the Russian Hockey Federation, Ministry of Sports.
Currently, each Russian club has the right to enter up to three foreign hockey players (including a goalkeeper) in the KHL championship – Russian hockey championship match. Considering the extension by the International Hockey Federation of restrictions on the participation of Russian hockey players in international championships of all categories and the impossibility of our clubs participating in international tournaments in Europe and North America, the FHR decided to consider the possibility of returning the limit for foreign players (five hockey players, no more than one goalkeeper) to one year – for the 2024/2025 season. The issue of return will be considered by the FHR Board of Directors.
The FHR management believes that the participation of a larger number of foreign players promotes sports competition and allows participants of the Russian championship to get acquainted with various schools of world professional hockey, which creates additional opportunities for exchange experiences,” says an official statement published on the FHR website.
Recall that in the current KHL season, the limit of foreign players was reduced for the first time to three foreign hockey players.
