Ovechkin will break Gretzky’s NHL sniper record, says Tolchinsky

Front SKA Sergei Tolshinsky said he was convinced that the captain of Washington Alexander Ovechkin will overtake the Canadian Wayne Gretzky on the list of best snipers in NHL history.

Ovechkin, 38, scored 65 points (31 goals, 34 assists) in 79 games during the 2023-24 regular season and helped the Capitals reach the NHL playoffs. The Russian remains 41 goals to score ahead of Wayne Gretzky’s regular season sniper record (894) (853).

— Do you follow the NHL?

– A little.

— Do you think Alexander Ovechkin will be able to beat Gretzky’s record?

“I’m sure Ovechkin will be able to do it.” Gretzky himself said it was only a matter of time. The question is therefore not whether Alexander will break this record, but when he will do so.

— How do you generally assess the performance of Russian hockey players in the regular NHL championship?

— Russian NHL hockey players still play leading roles: goaltenders, forwards and defensemen. This proves that we have an excellent school and that Russia is a real hockey country.

—Who is your favorite for the Stanley Cup?

— I don’t follow the NHL too closely, but I really like the Colorado game. It is difficult to make predictions, because everything in this league is very unpredictable,” Tolchinsky said, as quoted by Metaratings.ru.

Washington loses the series against the New York Rangers in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs – 0-1. The second match will take place on April 23 in New York.
