Athletistic/Football. SKA forward Sergei Tolchinsky says Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin will surpass Canadian Wayne Gretzky’s record in the list of top scorers in NHL history.

At 38 years old, Ovechkin scored 65 points (31 goals, 34 assists) in 79 games during the 2023-24 regular season, helping the Capitals reach the NHL playoffs. To surpass Gretzky’s record of 894 regular season goals, the Russian (853) had 41 goals left to score.

— Do you follow the NHL?

– A little.

— Do you think Alexander Ovechkin will be able to beat Gretzky’s record?

“I’m sure Ovechkin can do it.” Gretzky himself said it was only a matter of time. The question is therefore not if Alexandre will beat this record, but when.

— How do you evaluate the performance of Russian hockey players in the regular NHL championship?

— Russian NHL hockey players still play leading roles: goaltenders, forwards and defensemen. This proves that we have an excellent hockey school and that Russia is a real hockey power.

—Who is your favorite for the Stanley Cup?

— I haven’t followed the NHL closely, but I like the Colorado game. It is difficult to make predictions, because everything in this league is very unpredictable,” Tolchinsky said, as quoted by Metaratings.ru.
