The head coach “Winnipeg” Rick Bowness announced his retirement at the age of 69, reports the Jets press service.
The Canadian first became a head coach in 1982, leading AHL club Sherbrooke and combining the position with his playing career for two seasons. He first appeared in the NHL in the 1984–85 season, becoming an assistant to Winnipeg head coach Barry Long.
In total, Bowness spent 38 seasons in the NHL in various capacities, including as head coach of Boston, Ottawa, New York Islanders, Phoenix and Dallas. He led Winnipeg the past two seasons, both times the team reached the playoffs and both times lost in the first round (to Vegas and Colorado, respectively).
The best result of Bowness’ coaching career was reaching the Stanley Cup final with Dallas in the 2019/20 season, when his team lost to Tampa.
