The press service of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) announced the list of nominees for the award for the best coach of the 2023/24 season.
The list includes head coach of Severstal Cherepovets Andrei Kozyrev, Igor Nikitin of Yaroslavl Lokomotiv and head of Metallurg Magnitogorsk Andrei Razin.
Last season, Severstal, under the leadership of Kozyrev, who spent his first full season as head coach, took fifth place in the Western Conference standings. In the first round of the Fonbet KHL Championship playoffs, Cherepovets lost to Spartak Moscow (1–4).
Igor Nikitin took third place in the West with Lokomotiv; in the playoffs, the team reached the final for the first time in 15 years, in which they lost to Metallurg Magnitogorsk (0–4). Nikitin became the third coach in history to play in four Gagarin Cup finals.
Razin, who took charge of Metallurg last April, led the team to first place in the Eastern Conference and the third Gagarin Cup in the club’s history.
Previous winners of the Best Coach of the Season award were Oleg Znarok (four times), Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, Sergei Fedorov (both twice), Milos Rzhiga, Mike Keenan, Vyacheslav Bykov, Dmitry Kvartalnov, Igor Nikitin and Bob Hartley. The winner will be announced on May 13.
