Goalkeeper “San José” Georgiy Romanov admitted that NHL clubs began to be interested in him on the recommendation of the former coach of the Yekaterinburg Avtomobilist Bill Peters.
Peters managed Avtomobilist from 2020 to 2021. Romanov is a student of the club.
— Three years ago I was contacted by the Calgary system. Then the head coach of Avtomobilist was Peters – he recommended me to his former team, sent me videos of training sessions, which he himself filmed on his phone. I talked to the Flames goalie coaches: they wanted me to come, but they had a rebuild that year, so it didn’t work out.
I had to sign a contract with Avtomobilist. I couldn’t risk my career and wait for an offer from Calgary. There was a lack of detail, clarity and guarantees. Later the coach of Calgary moved to San Jose, his name is Thomas Speer. He recommended me to Evgeniy Nabokov and they contacted me towards the end of the season. “The Sharks said they were following me, watching my games and being interested in me,” Romanov is quoted as saying in The Championship.
In April, Romanov, 24, made his NHL debut and played in two games with San Jose.
