Switzerland beat Canada in shootouts and reached the final of the 2024 Ice Hockey World Cup

The defending champions managed to come back at the end of the third period, but their opponents were more effective in the post-match series

Team Canada resigned as champion, unexpectedly losing in shootouts Switzerland in the semi-finals 2024 Ice Hockey World Championship.

The most titled team in the world (28 World Cup victories) was unable to defend the title won in 2023. The Canadians lost the first period with a score of 0:2 – their opponent scored two power plays.

Andre Tourigny’s team managed to score in response towards the end of the second 20 minutes through the efforts of Brandon Tanev. Switzerland didn’t last long until the final siren – John Tavares equalized the score two minutes before the end.

Overtime did not reveal a winner, but in the shootout the “neutrals” were more successful. The winning shootout was scored by Sven Andrighetto.

Switzerland made it to the World Cup final for the third time in its history. Two previous attempts (2013, 2018) were unsuccessful for her. In the final, Patrick Fischer’s team will compete with the hosts of the tournament, the Czech national team, which previously defeated the Swedes (7:3). The decisive match (as well as the match for third place) will take place tomorrow, May 26.

Let us remind you that the Ukrainian national team won the 2024 World Cup in Division IB and next year will play in Division IA.
