The Russian national team rose to second place in the updated IIHF rankings, despite being suspended from participation in international tournaments. This became possible thanks to the defeat of the Finnish national team in the quarterfinals of the 2024 World Cup against Sweden and the protected ranking of the Russians.
“We must freeze the Russian team’s points for the duration of its suspension. Russia should receive 0 points for each competition. This rating is intended only for countries participating in the games,” Shemberg told SE.
Earlier, the IIHF announced that it may revise the rating system due to Russia’s position in the rankings.
