Arkady Dvorkovich: “Ovechkin can overtake Wayne Gretzky in about a year and a half”

President of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) Arkady Dvorkovich in a conversation with a correspondent, he expressed the opinion that the Washington striker Alexander Ovechkin in a year and a half will be able to surpass the record Wayne Gretzky by goals in regular season NHL .

The 38-year-old Russian still has 41 goals to score before Gretzky’s record as a sniper (894 goals) in the regular league.

— You are friends with Alexandre Ovechkine. What do you think of his season?

— It was not easy for Sasha to enter the season, the team has changed a lot. You had to get used to it, new ligaments had to appear. Gradually, he got into rhythm, got into a good rhythm and now has every chance, if not in a year, then in a year and a half, to set a unique record, overtaking Wayne Gretzky in terms of goals.

— Will you go to Ovechkin’s record match in America?

– We will see, life will show it. But it’s great that all our NHL stars are playing very well. Magnitogorsk graduate Evgeni Malkin, Artemy Panarin is having a brilliant season, our goalies are Igor Shesterkin, and of course Sergei Bobrovsky, a true playoff hero. We are happy for everyone – for the same Nikita Kucherov, who became the top scorer in the league. I hope this continues to be the case in the future,” Dvorkovich told .

Ovechkin scored 65 points (31+34) in 79 games during the 2023/24 regular season.
