Athletistic / Football. Russian Hockey Federation (RFH) President Vladislav Tretyak said the majority of Canadians support him even after sanctions were imposed against him. On June 13, Canadian authorities added 12 individuals and 16 legal entities to the sanctions list. Tretyak was also on this list.
“Of course, I still have friends in Canada. The decision of the country’s leadership regarding sanctions is their personal matter. Most Canadians support me, they know and respect me there, they love hockey.
Today, 64 Russian hockey players play in North America and everyone respects them. Just look at how Sergei Bobrovsky was congratulated after Florida won the Stanley Cup. There is no politics there,” Tretiak said, as quoted by TASS.
Vladislav Tretiak is subject to sanctions due to the conduct of a special military operation (SVO) by the Russian armed forces in Ukraine. In Canada, it is believed that Tretyak, as a State Duma deputy, voted for the creation of the SVO.
As a member of the USSR national team, Vladislav Tretyak became a three-time Olympic champion. In 1989, he became the first Soviet hockey player to be inducted into the Toronto Hockey Hall of Fame. In 1997, Tretiak was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame.
