The Ministry of Sports has approved the return of the limit of five foreign players in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). The corresponding decree of the department was published on the official legal information internet portal.
Starting from the 2024/25 season, Russian KHL teams will be able to enter more than five foreign hockey players into matches, including no more than one foreign goalie.
— The total number of athletes who are not eligible to play for sports teams of the Russian Federation and entered by a Russian sports club in the match of the Championship of the Kontinental Hockey League – Russian Hockey Championship among teams men in accordance with the regulations of such a sporting competition must not exceed 5 players, including 1 goalkeeper maximum,” specifies the order.
Starting from the 2023/24 season, Russian teams in the Fonbet KHL Championship could not include more than three foreigners in their application for matches. Previously, the KHL contacted the Russian Sports Ministry with a proposal to increase the limit on foreign athletes. The coaching council of the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) unanimously opposed this. Later, the FHR announced that it would consider reducing the limit on the number of foreign players to five people for the 2024/25 season.
