Athletistic / Hockey. The Washington Capitals press office reminded fans of the anniversary. Exactly 20 years ago, the management of the Moscow team selected Russian forward Alexander Ovechkin first in the NHL draft.

“Alexander Ovechkin moved to the United States in the fall of 2005. He still defends the colors of this club. Currently, he has the most goals in the history of the NHL among players selected with the first overall draft picks, and his 1,426 “Games are the second among players under the first number of the team that selected him,” Washington’s press service wrote on its social media page.

Ovechkin scored 1,550 (853+697) points in the goal+assist system in 1,426 NHL regular season games. He is now the second highest scorer in the history of the championship. The 38-year-old Russian has 41 goals left to beat Wayne Gretzky’s record.

Note that in 2018, Ovechkin helped Washington win the first and so far only Stanley Cup in club history.
