NHL club Washington Capitals published an article on a social network in honor of the 20th anniversary of the selection of a Russian hockey player Alexandra Ovechkina in the 2004 NHL Draft.
In the 2004 NHL draft, the capital club selected the Russian first overall.
“Ovechkin has the most goals in NHL history by a first overall pick, and his 1,426 games are the second most by a first overall player on the team that drafted him” , Washington said in a statement.
In 2018, the Russian helped Washington win the Stanley Cup.
Ovechkin, 38, ranks second on the NHL’s all-time goalscoring list with 853 goals, behind only Canada’s Gretzky (894).
