“Sergachev is the No. 1 defender.” Utah GM talks trading Russians from Tampa

general manager “Utah” Bill Armstrong believes that the exchanges “Tampa” Russian hockey player Mikhail Sergachev is the team’s best defender.

On Saturday, Tampa traded the 26-year-old Russian to Utah, who will make his first NHL appearance in the 2024/25 season. In return, the Lightning received forward Conor Geekie and defenseman Janis Moser, along with a second-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft and the 199th pick in this year’s draft.

— Sergachev is the number one defenseman. We wanted to take a hockey player who is ready to spend a lot of minutes on the field. He is strong, he plays hard, he blocks shots, he can play offense and defense and he has a winning history. We also have several Russian players in the form of [Даниила] Buta and [Дмитрия] Simasheva. We have high-quality players coming to our club and he will have a big influence on them as a leader as well,” Armstrong told the NHL’s official website.

During the past season, Sergachev played in 34 NHL regular season games, scoring 19 points (2+17). Mikhail has been playing for Tampa since 2017. As a member of the Lightning, the Russian became a two-time Stanley Cup winner.
