Maxim Mamin: “There was no guarantee in the NHL that I would play in the first links, so I returned to CSKA”

returned to CSKA offensive Maxime Mamin told that he decided to return to Russia in order to play a leading role in his team and not sit on the bench of one of the NHL clubs.

Mamin signed a three-year contract with CSKA in July. The 27-year-old striker is an army graduate, he played for the Continental Hockey League (KHL) team from 2014 to 2017 and from 2018 to 2021. In 2019, he won the Gagarin Cup in scoring the winning goal in the decisive match of the final.

Why did you decide to come back? Surely you had options in the NHL, where would you get playing time?

— I had time to reflect after the season, about a month. Finally, I decided to go home. Still, I’m not a young player, I’m already in my prime, I want to play a key role in the team, to have more playing time. In the NHL, as a free agent, I received offers from several teams, but there was no guarantee that I would get a foothold and play regularly in the first links, so I came back. Now I want to win a few more cups with my home team.

– There are few changes in the composition of CSKA, while the competitors are getting stronger. Do you think it will be possible to win the championship for the second time?

– The main thing is that the framework of the championship is preserved. Additionally, we have made some point improvements, so the team will definitely not be weaker than last year. Everyone is in a good mood now, we don’t look at who intensified. CSKA had more reserves that season, so we can play even stronger next season.

– Fedorov won the cup last year without any experience. Now this experience is, what specifically does he want from you?

– It is clear that Sergei Viktorovich and I have already spoken several times, but I would not like to divulge the nuances. It was a good conversation. For me, he will find a role that will be useful for the team. But we haven’t discussed this issue specifically yet.

– The KHL is now down in quality, do you agree? Were there any doubts?

– I disagree, now they will give way to young talents, and there are a lot of them in the country. I am sure that many of them will take the place of deceased legionnaires and take over the role of leaders. I don’t think the level of hockey will drop catastrophically.

Under what number do you plan to play? Shalunov took the 87th from you at some point …

– There is no doubt about it, I will go further in my career under the 98th number.

Last season Mamin played for Florida in the NHL and scored 14 (7+7) points in 44 games.
