general manager Washington Capitals Brian McLellan said he was trying to strengthen the team, especially for the sake of the captain Alexandra Ovechkina .
“We understand where we left off last year. We know we have to improve and get better. And for Ovechkin, too. I mean, last year there was a lot of pressure on Alex to perform because we didn’t have enough depth on the team. Hopefully, in the new season, he’ll be supported by a stronger team as a whole,” McLellan said, according to ESPN.
Ovechkin is 38 and has played for Washington since 2005. The Russian forward ranks second on the NHL’s all-time leading sniper list with 853 goals, just behind Canadian Wayne Gretzky (894).
