– I would say that in Sochi the conditions are more difficult – the sea is nearby, this gives increased humidity. Rather San Francisco.

At home you spend your free time fishing and hunting. How do you spend your free time here?

So far, there haven’t been many. Two days of rest in total. Last year I took over the team for the season, I also did not have time to rest – only one job. But in principle, you can get to Krasnaya Polyana.

– At the casino ?

No, I’m not going to the casino. Not interested. I love beating opponents, I will immediately be blacklisted there. I like walking in the mountains, the whole thing. Just be careful – you can get loose, there are dangerous places.

At which beach do you swim in Sochi?

– I live in Sochi without a beach. I can only go ashore, get my feet wet. I don’t lie on the beach and I urge my children not to go there. It is enough to walk along the embankment in the evening to breathe the sea air, it is possible.

“Melnychuk will keep the team fit”

– This summer, a promising young goalkeeper Oleksiy Melnychuk joined your team. He has an interesting bonus – four hundred thousand rubles for a cracker. It turns out that the whole team should help him to play zero?

– That’s the point. In addition to the fact that Alexey himself has to work for a clean win, he will also set up our defenders correctly, which will help him get the maximum result. It happens that a team leads by three goals, then stops play and concedes at the end, or that there are enough unnecessary eliminations. Thus, Melnychuk will help coaches to keep the team fit until the last second.

– About your other goalkeeper – Maxim Tretyak – you said at a press conference: “I’m waiting for Maxim to open up.” Isn’t it too late?

– Maxim is only 25 years old. Many goaltenders at this age are just starting to show their hockey. You could have trusted him more last season. But Magnus Hellberg came to Sochi, who simply ate our young goalkeeper. And now it’s Tretiak’s turn to play the lead roles.

— We can see that your club has a good relationship with the SKA. The Saint Petersburg club recently sold five young players and the rights to four others to Spartak defender Alexander Nikishin. I wish you such a massive win!

– You see, that means not only are we friends with SKA. Spartak also have links with the Saint Petersburg club.

What was your first thought when you heard about this exchange? Strongly upset?

– Not. Spartak is a good club, they can also competently develop youngsters. Since this transfer satisfied everyone, why not? In Sochi the management also did a great job, we have a lot of young people in the team. If five more people were suddenly added, we would have to say goodbye to someone. It would be impossible to keep everyone.

“Rothenberg and I support each other”

– Fans often ask why Nazarov loves Roman Rotenberg so much?

Why does he love right away? We are about the same age. Therefore, we communicate well and support each other.

– But do you have very positive comments about it?

– That’s how we joke sometimes, easy trolling. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Who is in the subject, understand everything correctly and smile.

– In Moscow, you live on the Patriarchs. There is a popular series about its inhabitants – “Unprincipled”. Is it really there?

– Architecture, streets – everything comes from there. The actors are also good, but the plot itself is boring. Turns out the people there only drink vodka and fuck. The question arises – when do they work to at least pay for a common apartment? An obvious inconsistency. The atmosphere of light drunkenness is certainly present in life, but not so much debauchery. Although, I don’t know, I’m a married man.

“How’s your famous billiard room in Chelyabinsk?”

– Firm. Billard and Chelyabinsk turned out to be an incompatible project. Although, to be completely honest, I’m the one who has to take care of hockey – something I love and know well. And running a bar business remotely is very difficult, almost unrealistic.

– What is the place of money in your work in the KHL? After all, you’re a pretty rich person without hockey.

We all work for money. There is not a single person who would go to work like that. Another thing is that if the proposal is interesting, I am ready to encroach on the contract and consider it fair.

– How can you attract foreign players to the KHL now?

– Here they are – only money. Moreover, all legionnaires who go to Russia are afraid of intensive training. They need to hang noodles we won’t train you here, just pay, come on, come on. Well, upon arrival, a stranger will fall into our arms and work like the whole team. Some people fall for it, some don’t.

— Your new defender Joe Morrow found out he lost his passport on his way to the airport on his way to Sochi. Has this happened to you?

– Thank god no. But he already has a new passport, so we’ll have Joe soon.

— Does your team need a powerful badass, or are they all already extinct like dinosaurs?

– Tough guys are no longer needed in modern hockey. A real badass is a highly specialized fighter. If there are only two in the league, who are you going to fight? You have to have a guy in the roster who can fight, but at the same time plays good defense, is useful in the minority, catches pucks on himself… He’s the kind of combat hockey player whose every team needs. And not even in one. They will be useful.

– Do you feel sorry that the days of tough guys are over? Or, on the contrary, thank God, because many hockey players suffer from a concussion after the end of their career.

It’s too late to regret and there’s nothing. As the saying goes, don’t cry for the lost. Not only hockey has changed, all of life. It just happened before our eyes, so we notice it.

– Practice shows that tough guys make good coaches. For example, Craig Berubi from St. Louis. And you are one of them.

We have played at the highest level and seen it all. In other words, they were in the heart of the matter, but they did not have the necessary skills to assume the first roles in the teams. But we understand perfectly how everything happens in hockey, we know all the nuances. And we can pass on our experience to current players.

– After the story with Ivan Fedotov, young players are afraid to enter the army. How did you serve in your time?

“When I was 17, Dynamo ripped me off Traktor for a bag of clubs. I remember how I came to the local FSB and received documents there for going to the border guard school. So I came to Dynamo without any compensation for Traktor. That’s how it was back then. We were twelve there – Sergey Gonchar, Igor Bakhmutov, Vitya Kozlov, Lesha Yashin. It was our whole sporting enterprise. And everyone got into Dynamo for free. Then the Moscow club debugged a scheme according to which it was possible to collect promising young people from all over the country without any effort – simply by offering the guys to serve two years at the Golitsinsky school.

– Dominik Hasek stirred our hockey community with his anti-Russian statements. What do you think about it?

– I would call it Czech…radish. Fufel came to Russia, made money here, and not bad at that. And then he came home and began to water our country. When you read this, there are simply no words.

– Are you interested in watching the World Cup without the participation of Russia?

– I haven’t watched a single game. The World Cup without Russia is a bunch of… radishes, to put it mildly. Fools run there, but the Russian team was not invited. Nothing good comes to mind.

“The personal weight does not bother me”

– Are you still torturing yourself with iron in the hall?

– I still press a lot, but I don’t really rest much. I call it “chopping wood” in the morning. He walked in, picked up a weight, a barbell and left. I don’t do bodybuilding, I don’t like it. I just need to know that I’m still a strong person and I can do something about it. And such a thing as “extra weight” does not particularly excite me.
