There is no global tragedy in depriving Russia of quotas for the World Figure Skating Championships, says Gachinsky

Coach and bronze medalist at the world championships Arthur Gachinsky in a conversation with , he referred to the decision of the International Skating Union (ISU) to reduce the number of Russian quotas for the 2023 World Figure Skating Championships.

On Wednesday, the ISU published the quota allocation scheme for the 2022/23 season on the website. Russia has kept the maximum number of quotas for the European Championship, however, the World Championship will only be able to present one representative in each type of program if Russians are allowed to participate.

– Yesterday’s decision by the International Skating Union is dictated by applicable law. There are strict rules for participation in the World and European Championships, which are followed by all sports federations, national teams. If the representatives of a certain country do not participate in the tournament or do not earn the required number of points according to the performance results of the team members, the number of quotas for the following year is reduced. Russia has problems with this now, because no one represented our country at the last world championships. As a result, the quota for the new season is minimal. These hard limits always have been.

But I think there is no global drama in the deprivation of quotas. If our skaters go to the World Championships, it will not be difficult for them to return all the quotas for next year. Based on the results of the selection, the athlete in each event will bring glory and opportunity to the country. Great incentive and great responsibility! In general, the whole current situation is fixable and depends only on how our skaters show themselves.

How would I feel in the shoes of today’s figure skaters? Serious question. At 17, on emotions, of course, you can make the wrong decision. But I think I will continue to ride. The quotas will increase and everything will fall into place. It’s a matter of time,” Gachinsky told .
