Washington GM: ‘I truly believe we can end the Ovechkin era with a competitive team’

general manager Washington Capitals Chris Patrick expects team to spend final seasons with captain Alexander Ovechkin having a competitive composition.

Patrick took over as general manager in July, succeeding Brian McLellan. He is the son of club co-owner and president Dick Patrick.

— My intention is to be competitive. I’m not one of those who likes to lose. I truly believe that we can, for lack of a better term, end the Ovechkin era with a competitive team.

“It’s easy for people to say, ‘Your superstars are getting old, it’s time to rebuild and start over.’ In fact, it can be a lot harder than it seems. You’ve seen how many teams have tried to do that and seemed to get stuck in a never-ending cycle of tearing down and building up, never achieving what they wanted,” Patrick said, as quoted by the league’s press office.

Ovechkin is 38 and has played for Washington since 2005. The Russian forward ranks second on the NHL’s all-time leading sniper list with 853 goals, just behind Canadian Wayne Gretzky (894).
