Athletistic / Hockey. Reporter Sammy Silber, in his article on the popular North American website The Hockey News, raised the possibility of the Washington Capitals coaching staff removing forward Alexander Ovechkin from the left back position during a power play.

“I don’t think Ovechkin will immediately move away from the power-play defenseman role, I think Kirk Mueller (Washington assistant coach) will. Note Athletistic) during training camp will see how Pierre-Luc Dubois and other hockey players interact with Ovechkin, and only then will the coaching staff begin to act.

After a rough start last season, Washington finished with a better power play in the second period and things were looking up for the team. However, there’s no reason to move Ovechkin away from his defenseman spot right now, even if the addition of Jacob Chickran presents an opportunity to move Ovechkin elsewhere.

Heading into training camp, the coaches will take a wait-and-see approach. Spencer Carbery has stressed that the power play will be a big issue for the club. But for now, I don’t see a large-scale restructuring,” Silber wrote.

Ovechkin has scored 1,550 (853+697) points in the “goal+assist” system in 1,426 NHL regular-season games. He is now the second-leading scorer in league history. The 38-year-old Russian needs to score 41 times before reaching Wayne Gretzky’s record.

It is worth noting that in 2018, Ovechkin helped Washington win the first and so far only Stanley Cup in club history.
