Washington striker welcomed the Russian club’s appearance in the Belarusian championship

Belarusian striker “Washington » Alexei Protas expressed his pleasure to include the Russian club Slavutich among the participants in the Belarusian hockey championship.

In July, it was officially announced that Slavutich from Smolensk would participate in the Belarusian championship for the 2024/25 season.

— What is your fate in Smolensk?

— I am a student at Smolensk State Sports University and I came here to study.

— In the coming season, “Slavutich” will participate in the Extraleague, a few words about this?

— Many of my friends will be in Slavutich. And it is very good that the team decided to join the Belarusian championship. There will be another interesting opponent – this is only a plus for the whole league,” Protas said in an interview with the official website of the Belarusian Hockey Federation.

Protas, 23, selected by Washington in the third round of the 2019 draft, has a contract with the NHL club that runs through 2029. Last season, he played 82 games, including the playoffs, and scored 31 (6+25) performance points. In the KHL, he previously played for Dynamo Minsk, where he spent the 2020/21 season.

The Belarusian Championship was open until 2013 (except for the 2007/08 season). In addition to Belarusian teams, several clubs from Latvia and Kiev Sokol participated in the tournament. The predecessor of the Extraleague, the Eastern European Hockey League (VEHL), included Russian clubs “Captain”, MSU and “Titan”.
