The KHL has announced changes to the rules of the game for the 2024/25 season.

Continental Hockey League (KHL ) has made changes to the rules of the game ahead of the start of the 2024/25 season, according to the organization’s website.

The changes were made based on the results of an analysis and a survey of clubs, as well as in accordance with the KHL’s development strategy, aimed at increasing entertainment and attacking play, combating passive actions of players and reducing the overall duration of matches.

— Goalies will be able to throw the puck out of the trap towards the opponent’s goal. Previously, the goalie received a minor fine for such an action. This change will reduce the number of breaks and speed up the transition of teams to the attack.

The changes also affect the procedure for taking a free throw – if the goaltender plays the puck, but it continues to move towards the goal line, the free throw is not completed and the attacking player can play the puck. In the previous version of the rule, the penalty throw was completed the moment the goaltender touched the puck.

A change has been made to the rule regarding the replacement of the goalkeeper by a fourth field player in extra time: the goalkeeper can return to the game at any time in accordance with the substitution rules. Previously, the goalkeeper was only allowed to return to the goal during a break.

The interpretation of trips has been adjusted – if the goaltender plays the puck first and then trips, there will be no penalty. If a skater contacts the puck first and then trips the puck, no penalty will be assessed either.

Referees will monitor the substitution procedure more closely: the visiting team has five seconds to do so, the home team eight. For the first infraction, the judges will issue a warning, for the second and each subsequent infraction, a small fine, the message says.
