Canadian forward for the Dynamo hockey club Maxime Comtois recounted how he chose his jersey number for the new team.
On Thursday, the 25-year-old from Comtois signed a one-year contract with Dynamo.
— What went wrong in your career? Why did you end up in the AHL after several successful seasons in Anaheim?
— A lot of factors came into play. Sometimes the game worked, sometimes it didn’t. I don’t think coming to the AHL was a step backwards. I got a lot of playing time, I scored points. Thank you very much to Chicago for that. I had the opportunity to come back to the NHL and play for Carolina. That’s my career path. Now I have a chance to continue to grow and develop in the KHL.
— Why did you decide to choose number 10? Previously, we played in the under-44 category.
— I love number 44. My mother was born on April 4. I like 19th and 91st, but they are busy at Dynamo. I also played in U53 before. As for number 10, I am a fan of Messi. I can’t say that I chose the top ten in his honor. I just decided that it would be a new chapter.
— You have quite a bit of penalty time. Can we expect fights and skirmishes from you in the KHL?
“I don’t fight for no reason.” I only fight if I need to protect my partner. I’m a big guy and I like to do power moves. It’s part of my style. There are not as many fights in the KHL as in the NHL. I don’t intend to finish the season with a lot of penalty minutes. Yes, I like the strong style, I can fight. If I need to irritate my opponents, I will do it, the main thing is that it benefits the team. My fight with Kostin at the World Junior Championships was nothing personal. “It’s part of the game,” says Comtois, a correspondent for .
Comtois was selected 50th overall by the Anaheim Ducks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. The NHL forward also played for the Carolina Hurricanes. In total, he played 211 games in the league’s regular season championships and scored 87 points (38 goals and 49 assists).
As a member of the Canadian national team, Comtois won gold and silver at the world championships.
