Roman Rotenberg linked the final score of the “Game of the Year” to Ovechkin breaking Gretzky’s NHL sniper record.

Head coach of SKA and first vice-president of the Russian Hockey Federation (RHF) Romain Rotenberg said the score of the “Game of the Year” between the KHL and NHL stars suggests that Alexander Ovechkin will break Canadian Wayne Gretzky’s sniper record.

At the “Game of the Year” Rotenberg was part of the coaching staff of the KHL All-Star team.

“The 8:8 score is a sign that Sasha Ovechkin will score the required number of goals to repeat Gretzky’s record,” the correspondent reports, citing Rotenberg’s words.

Ovechkin is 38 and wears the No. 8 jersey for Washington. The Russian forward ranks second on the NHL’s all-time leading sniper list with 853 goals, just behind Canadian Gretzky (894). With the Capitals, the Russian won the Stanley Cup in the 2017/18 season.
