Athletistic / Hockey. Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin has spoken about his desire to win an Olympic medal. The 38-year-old Russian has competed in three Olympic Games but has yet to reach the podium.

“Of course I want an Olympic medal. Look, there have been so many moments, there have been so many opportunities, but unfortunately there is no medal yet… I am very happy for the guys when they won Olympic gold in 2018. But unfortunately I was not there, that’s why…

“In theory, it’s still possible, but you see what’s happening with the Russian team right now: we’re not allowed to the World Championships or the Olympics, so I don’t know how it’s all going to work out,” Ovechkin said in a podcast episode on blogger Amiran Sardarov’s YouTube channel.

Alexander Ovechkin competed at the 2006 Turin, 2010 Vancouver and 2014 Sochi Olympics. In 2006, the Russian team took 4th place at the Olympics, and in 2010 and 2014 they lost in the quarterfinals.

After the start of the SVO in Ukraine, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) made a politicized decision and suspended the Russian team from international tournaments. Therefore, the participation of the Russians in the 2026 Olympic Games in Italy now remains a big question.
