Athletistic / Hockey. Washington Hockey Now published an article by journalist Nathan Moser assessing Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin’s chances of breaking Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goalscoring record at the end of the 2024-25 season.
“Ovechkin is now 42 goals short of passing Wayne Gretzky for the most goals in NHL history. With Alex under contract with Washington for two more seasons, he should be able to break that record. Will that milestone be reached in the 2024/2025 season, only time will tell.
In the 2022/2023 season, Ovi scored the 42 goals we needed. He also scored 50 goals in the 2021/2022 season. Therefore, Alexander is quite capable of breaking this record in the new NHL season. I hope he and his teammates will be motivated to try to break this record before the end of next season. Obviously, Washington has other goals, such as trying to win another Stanley Cup in the Ovechkin era. “If the goal record were set next season, it would give more meaning to Washington’s special campaign,” Moser wrote.
Alexander Ovechkin has scored 853 goals in his NHL career in regular season play. He is now 41 goals away from Gretzky’s record of 894. The 38-year-old Russian’s contract with the Washington Capitals is valid for two more seasons.
Wayne Gretzky played in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. He ended his career in 1999.
