“The judge just dumped us.” Ovechkin on his 2010 World Cup final loss

Attack Washington Capitals and three-time world hockey champion Alexander Ovechkin said that during the 2010 World Cup final, the referee “exposed” the Russian team.

Ovechkin is 38 years old. As a member of the Russian national team, he participated in 13 World Championships, three Olympic Games (2006, 2010, 2014) and two World Cups (2004, 2016). The Russian missed the 2018 and 2022 games due to a ban from the National Hockey League (NHL), which did not allow its hockey players to participate in the tournament.

— Before Quebec, you participated in four world championships. Was it possible to win gold earlier?

— The Russian national team has always come to the World Championships with a strong composition. But a lot depends on nuances, for example, on luck.

In Riga (2006) we had a good chance, but we missed it because of our own mistakes. In the same Germany (2010) they lost to the Czechs in the final, but the referee simply sent us off.

– And in Moscow?

— At both World Championships in Moscow, the pressure on the team was very serious. Although the composition and the team in both cases were excellent, something was missing,” said three-time world champion, Washington captain Alexander Ovechkin, according to the FHR press service, citing Ovechkin.
