“Voinov in Torpedo can show a game that he has not demonstrated for a long time” – Nikita Shchitov

Transition to Nizhny Novgorod “Torpedo” may have a better impact on a defender’s performance Vyacheslava Voinova says a former player of several KHL clubs Nikita Shchitov .

On Monday, Torpedo signed a contract with Voinov. The hockey player’s agreement with the Nizhny Novgorod team is for one season. Earlier, the player’s agent Stanislav Romanov told that the 34-year-old defender had terminated his contract with Ak Bars Kazan.

– He is a good and experienced defender, there are not many like him. This will be useful in Torpedo. Voinov can show a game that he has not shown for a long time. Maybe he will communicate a lot, score points and enjoy hockey.

— There is an opinion that Voynov is a slow player in Igor Larionov’s system.

“He played as required in Ak Bars: he didn’t get involved forward, he played strictly, he didn’t run much. Why can’t he join the Torpedo attack? He doesn’t need to run with his head down, the main thing is to connect correctly, to be where the puck will be, and Voinov knows how to read the game. You can run like crazy, but you won’t do any good, you’ll just run and disturb your teammates,” Shchitov told RB Sport.

Last season, Voynov scored 14 points (1+13) in 40 KHL regular season games. As a member of the Russian national team, Voinov won the 2018 Olympics and also became a silver medalist at the 2022 Olympics. The defenseman is a two-time Stanley Cup winner with Los Angeles.

The new KHL season starts on September 3, with Torpedo hosting Severstal Cherepovets a day later.
