Slovak hockey players playing for Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) clubs can once again be called up to the country’s national team, according to the Slovak Hockey Federation’s website.
The decision was made based on the results of a vote in which all clubs of the Slovak Hockey Championship participated. 52% of club representatives voted for the participation of KHL players in the national team, 38% against. 10% of respondents abstained from answering.
— According to an opinion poll, the hockey movement is inclined to believe that during individual tournaments, the national team should have the strongest possible composition, regardless of the players’ club affiliation. Thus, the national team coaches will have complete freedom of choice when searching for candidates for the team for international tournaments. The individual performances of the players will determine their call-up to the national team.
National team candidates for the final Olympic qualifying tournament in August will be announced in the coming weeks, the statement said.
In May, the Slovak Hockey Federation did not call up players from KHL clubs to the national team for the World Championship, citing the hockey players’ “personal situation” as the reason.
