Colorado signs hockey player who missed 20 months with mental health issues

NHL club Colorado Avalanche has signed defender Oliver Shillington to a contract, the team’s press service reports.

The agreement with the 27-year-old Swede is for one season; according to media reports, the hockey player’s salary will be $1.05 million.

Shillington, formerly of the Calgary Flames, missed the 2022-23 season and the first half of the 2023-24 season due to mental health concerns. In May, the defenceman was nominated for the Bill Master Memorial Trophy, which recognizes excellence in sportsmanship and dedication to the game of hockey. In six seasons in Calgary, Shillington scored 55 points (17 goals, 38 assists) in 201 regular-season games.

Earlier, Colorado forward Nichushkin of Russia was sent to the third stage of the NHL’s player assistance program. Under the terms of the program, he will be suspended from games and practices with the team without pay for at least six months before being eligible to apply for reinstatement.
