Press service Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RCF) reported on the death at the age of 57 of the famous Russian referee Sergei Karabanov.
Karabanov began his career as a referee in children’s matches in 1985 and gradually rose to a high level. In 1992 he was named to the European Youth Championship and a year later to the World Championship. Since 1994 he has worked as a chief judge.
For 19 seasons at the highest level of Russian hockey, he played 682 matches, and in 2000 he received the award for the best referee in the Russian championship – the Golden Whistle named after Andrey Starovoitov.
After ending his career as a judge in 2015, he worked at the FHR as an inspector.
