Vasily Glotov – about the NHL: “Without success in the KHL, nothing will happen there. First of all, I want to win the Gagarin Cup.”

SKA before Vasily Glotov told that without success in the KHL, namely winning the Gagarin Cup, there is no point in going to play in the NHL.

Glotov is a student of the Altai team. In the 2016 NHL Entry Draft, he was selected in the seventh round, 190th overall, by the Buffalo Cybers. During the 2016-17 to 2018-19 seasons, he played in the North American minor leagues for the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, Shawinigan Cataracts, Cincinnati Cyclones and Rochester Americans. Since September 2022, he has been playing for SKA. His current contract with the St. Petersburg club runs until the 2024/25 season.

— Do you still think that one day you will play in the NHL?

– I can’t close any doors. I’m at a good age. I certainly don’t rule out this option, but I soberly assess the situation. There must be a real offer that I can compare with the conditions at SKA. For me, hockey, playing time and power play have always been a priority. If there is an offer from the NHL and I understand that I can gain a foothold there, I will consider it. But first of all, I want to win the Gagarin Cup. SKA has a very strong team. On paper, the composition is very strong. I will do my best to improve last year’s game, bring more advantages to the team, score goals, do the right things on the ice. I hope that we will achieve our most cherished goal and after the season we will have time to slowly think about everything. Without success in the KHL, there will be nothing.

— Have you really never received an offer from Buffalo?

— It so happened that I still had two-year contracts and there was no real dialogue, because all the communication took place in the last year of the current agreement. The NHL needs ready-made players “here and now”, and I am no longer at the age of a prospect to make my way into the lower leagues. Therefore, either I will go there to play, or I will stay in Russia. I do not have a goal to get to the NHL via the AHL. We will wait and see. But now I am focusing on the KHL. If my thoughts go to the NHL, then I will not have success in Russia and everyone will see it from the outside. Now that training camp has started, I will do my best. I prepared all summer and did not rest at all.

— You trained all summer? You didn’t go anywhere on vacation?

“I rested for two weeks and then started training. I did a little over eight weeks of cycling in the gym and spent a week and a half skating with a coach,” Glotov told .

Last season, the 26-year-old forward played 70 games for SKA, in which he scored 50 (27+23) points.
