Athletistic / Hockey. Washington Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery says he believes Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin will be able to surpass Wayne Gretzky’s NHL goalscoring record by the end of the 2024-25 season.
“I am absolutely convinced that Ovechkin can score 42 goals next season. If Alex can get into the right shooting positions, which I expect from him, then I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say that at his age he can hit our opponents’ goal 42 times, given his sniper skills.
“The Washington coaching staff, Ovie’s teammates and himself are doing a great job of focusing on everything it takes to achieve this goal. There’s no doubt that people in Washington – coaches, players – are looking forward to this day coming as soon as possible,” Carbery was quoted as saying by the NHL press service.
Alexander Ovechkin has scored 853 goals in his NHL career in regular season play. He is now 41 goals away from Gretzky’s record of 894. The 38-year-old Russian’s contract with the Washington Capitals is valid for two more seasons.
The new NHL season will begin on October 4 with a game between the Buffalo Sabres and the New Jersey Devils in Prague, Czech Republic. The first game in North America will be played on October 8.
