Former Chelsea goalkeeper Cech to play for British Hockey League side Belfast Giants

Former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech has returned to Northern Ireland Giants Belfast, according to the hockey club’s website.

The team plays in the British Elite Hockey League (EIHL). The Czech will play for Belfast on a short-term loan while main goalkeeper Jackson Whistle will be part of the British national team.

In November 2023, Belfast loaned Cech as an emergency goalkeeper. On 26 November, the goalkeeper made his debut for the team as a substitute. In February 2024, Belfast signed Cech for a second time on loan from Oxford City Stars.

— Peter was a big help to us last season when we had some issues with goaltending injuries. He is a true professional and a winner and his presence alongside the players at training camp will benefit the team greatly. Peter is one of the hardest working players on the ice. “We are thrilled to welcome him back to Belfast,” said Belfast Giants head coach Adam Keefe.

Cech previously played for the Guildford Phoenix and Chelmsford Chieftains hockey teams of the British Second Division. In January, Cech trained with Chicago of the NHL.

Cech spent most of his football career at Chelsea, where he became a four-time English champion and won the Champions League and Europa League. The goalkeeper also played for London’s Arsenal, French Rennes, Czech Sparta and Khmel. The goalkeeper holds the Czech national football team record for the number of matches played (124).
